Tralee offers complimentary on-street Wi-Fi ahead of Rose of Tralee International Festival

Bitbuzz Freedom now in Tralee, Dublin, Cork, and Killarney

Following the successful launch of Bitbuzz Freedom in Dublin in 2012 and Cork and Killarney in 2013, Bitbuzz, Ireland’s largest outdoor Wi-Fi operator, has been busy rolling-out its complimentary Wi-Fi service to other parts of the country. Tralee is the second town in Kerry to take up the Bitbuzz Freedom service, ahead of its showcase annual Rose of Tralee festival in August.

Bitbuzz Freedom is now available on Denny Street, The Mall and The Square, Tralee and is an expansion of the Bitbuzz service and offers the same quality of service the Wi-Fi company currently provides in hotels and coffee shops. The service is 100% funded by Bitbuzz.

Designed for smartphone users, Bitbuzz Freedom will provide multiple complimentary 20 minute Wi-Fi sessions to shoppers, passers-by and tourists, allowing any smartphone user that logs on with Bitbuzz to use practical shopping apps, maps, check websites and browse social networking sites at no cost.

Bitbuzz will be using multi-band wireless point-to-point backhaul technology to provide a much better performance than traditional “mesh” solutions. This will enable users to move around and continue surfing the internet as they walk down the street.

The complimentary Wi-Fi service is already proving very popular with smartphone users in the town since going live on July 9th. Bitbuzz were keen to ensure the outdoor Wi-Fi was in place for tourists over the summer, ahead of the five day Rose of Tralee festival in August, where Wi-Fi usage is expected to increase by 1000%.

CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge said: It is great to be able to offer a free Wi-Fi service to both the town’s local population and the many visitors to the town. Tralee would like to develop its image as a modern technological town and free Wi-Fi is a way of showing this. Hopefully it will encourage more business into the town centre and encourage people to stay longer and take advantage of the wonderful facilities we have. We would like to thank Bitbuzz for the installation of free Wi-Fi in Tralee as well as the local businesses who made it possible through the location of antennas. The former Tralee Town Council played a key role in bringing this to fruition and deserve a particular word of thanks.

Since launching in June 2012, Bitbuzz Freedom has already recorded excellent levels of usage on in Dublin, Cork and Killarney. Shane Deasy, Managing Director, Bitbuzz said: “Bitbuzz Freedom has become essential for international tourists coming to Ireland. Tourists want to stay connected with their family and friends at home, and share their experiences on social media sites. We are confident that our service will accommodate these tourists and keep them coming back to the country’s best known festival.”

Bitbuzz recently announced an 81% increase in registered users and a 67% increase in logins, which was in part attributed to the growth of Bitbuzz Freedom last year.

Earlier this year, the Tralee App was launched with a view to further promoting the town as the ideal base from where to explore the Wild Atlantic Way. Available to download to iPhones, iPads and Android devices, the App also supports the image of Tralee as a modern technological town.  The Tralee App, offering comprehensive information about Tralee as a tourism or commercial location, is free to download from https://itunes.apple.com and https://play.google.com/store/apps.
