Quest to retain Tidy Town Gold Medal underway as Tralee prepares to welcome summer tourists

ONE hour per week for only six weeks is what it will take to help Tralee retain the lucrative Gold Medal status in this year’s Tidy Town’s Competition.

The campaign to win the three-in-a-row is underway since the 1st of May and local people have been invited to volunteer to take part in the weekly clean-up events between 7pm and 8pm every Thursday in May and June.

The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “The hard work and dedication of the people involved in the volunteer effort to move towards a better Tralee has paid off in recent years and we are fully behind the campaign to climb the Tidy Towns ladder in 2014. It was a wonderful achievement to win consecutive Gold Medals in 2012 and 2013 and to be shortlisted in the Top 10 Tourism Towns Awards in 2013. This year we have an added incentive to make sure our town is looking its best when Tralee represents Ireland in the Entente Florale Competition. A tidy Tralee will also go a long way towards helping businesses in the tourism sector to attract more visitors this year.”

Tralee Chamber Alliance has already taken steps to help frontline hotel and tourist sector staff with all the positive family-friendly attractions on their doorstep.

Over 50 people, including the volunteers who will work in the Tourism Kiosk in the Town Centre took part in a familiarisation tour of Tralee ahead of the upcoming summer holiday season.

Organised by Tralee Chamber Alliance and the Tralee Hotel Group, the participants enjoyed an educational and entertaining tour of the town’s key tourist and beauty spots including the Town Park, Kerry County Museum, Siamsa Tire Theatre, Blennerville Windmill and Tralee Bay Wetlands.

“Everyone can do some simple things to approve the appearance of their premises such as wiping down the paintwork and cleaning the windows but it needs to be done regularly. If we all work together we can make Tralee a better place. A more attractive town is good for business, so let’s help Tidy Towns achieve the Gold medal,” added Kieran Ruttledge.

Details of the weekly town clean-up events and the meeting points will be posted on www.tralee.ie and Facebook.com/TraleeChamberAlliance each week.
